Write Poetry for Money

Poetry is one of the oldest and most fashionable forms of prose that we still use today, and all languages across the world have their own styles and genres of poetry that are used to portray thoughts and feelings in many different ways. Have you considered that you may be able to write poetry for money? The possibilities are very real indeed, and all you need is a little know how and knowledge of the best places to go.

Writing poetry for money is something that many people do for a little extra income; poetry is used commercially in many walks of life - think of greetings cards as a major starting point - or can simply be something that you want to do for your own pleasure with the added bonus of possibly adding to your income. Indeed. Such is the power of the internet these days that many people are choosing to publish their own works themselves, and there are also publishers of anthologies who will include your work for a small fee, with the possibility of royalty payments coming your way.

Poetry comes in many forms, and not all of it is necessarily rhyming; the traditional rhyming couplet is an ancient art that can be difficult to achieve with great success, but other forms of poetry - for instance free verse, in which the standard forms of rhythm and rhyme are dispensed with to produce a more free flowing form of verse - are thriving, too.

Some forms of poetry come from foreign quarters - take the Haiku, an ancient Japanese art form that is increasingly popular and very expressive - for instance@

“Waterjar cracks-

I lie awake

This icy night.”

The Haiku involves a limited form and lends itself to modern odes that are also useful for inclusion on greetings cards.

The best way to start is to simply write down some thoughts that you have, using the words you believe best fit the mood and meaning of what you are describing or feeling. Once you have some phrases and sentences - or just words - ready you can manipulate them to form a verse, and worry not at this stage about length or shape or, indeed, whether or not the words flow.

For help, read some of the more popular poets and pick one or two lesser known names: the beat poets of the 1960's can offer some interesting ideas in terms of free verse, while the classic romantic poets such as Keats and Shelley are prime examples of how to structure verse in the traditional manner.

Whatever you choose to do, have a friend or associate read your work back, and allow them to offer criticism of your efforts. Most of all, however, remember that you are doing this for you - and use the internet to search for the best methods of making money from your poetry.
